Seachem Safe after bleach soak for Purigen

Oops-I kept referring to Seachem Safe as Start in my other thread. Old and tired brain.

What I would like to know is when using Seachem Safe instead of Seachem Prime after the bleach soak when regenerating Purigen, how much Safe do you use per cup of water. If you use the instructions for each product for general use as a dechlorinator the conversion I come up with is about 1/3 tsp Safe per cup of water or more easily converted, 1/2 tsp Safe to 1 1/2 cup of water.

If anyone has been using Safe instead of Prime for Purigen regeneration and can educate me on this I would appreciate it.

I'm not sure about using it specifically to regenerate purigen; but Safe is highly concentrated. I use it in all my tanks and the measurements are all fractions of a teaspoon (smidge, dab, pinch). I think its like 1/2 teaspoon for 75 gallons.

Just checked their site and they claim "If you are using Safe instead of Prime, you should use about 16 grams of Safe per cup of water." specifically for regenerating purigen. Seachem - Safe
I've seen that also. 16 grams = 3.2tsp(1.25g = 1/4 tsp). That just seems like a lot to me when 1/4 tsp treats 300 gallons. For comparison 1 capful(5mL) of prime treats 50 gallons. When I measured it out two capfuls equaled 1 tbs. If you use 4 tbs to 1 cup of water to dechlorinate after the bleach soak as directed that's an amount that will treat 400 gallons(8 capfuls @ 50 gallons per capful).

3.2tsp(16 grams) of Safe would treat 3840 gallons of water. 3.2 tsp = 12.8 - 1/4 tsp x 300 gallons.

What am I missing here? If you just compare the amount to treat a given number of gallons of water for each I come up with 1/2 tsp of Safe for 1 1/2 cup of water.

I guess they're suggesting a larger dose specifically for recharging purigen as its a much higher chlorine concentration than what you'd typically see in a fish tank and/or from tap water.
Yeah, you're doing that with the Prime also. Using enough to treat 400 gals. I wonder why you need to use enough to treat over 3000 gals with the Safe. It would seem to me that if the Prime dose that treats 400 gals is effective after the bleach soak then why doesn't a dose of Safe that treats 400 gals accomplish the same thing? Just seems strange to me I guess.

Someone already did!
Right you are! I guess I got taken up with the discussion on Seachem's instructions on using such a large amount. Thanks for reminding me of the post.

I use Safe also and I typically use what I think would work in the amount of water that I use. So for 2-3 cups of water, I'll use maybe a 1/2 teaspoon to a teaspoon. You'll know it's working if you can't smell the bleach anymore. Often times, I'll recharge the Purigen with bleach, then I'll let it sit Safe for a day or two. Usually I'll forget about it and let it sit for several days. I haven't had any problems that I'm aware of.
SwissCheeseHead thank you very much for your response. It looks like the amount of Safe you are using is very close to what I thought would make sense. I use two batches of Purigen so I have one ready to go when I service the filter. I'll do the bleach soak and dechlorination of the one I removed over the next couple of days. I think many people do this. I just got done doing this and used 1/2 teaspoon of Safe to 1 1/2 cups of water and didn't detect any bleach smell at all(at least as well as my worn out nose could, maybe I should have someone else give it a sniff). I thought to be safe(no pun intended) I would soak it in Safe again for a day before I reuse it.

Thanks again!
