I just started adding fish to my 5 gallon hex. I have 2 shrimp, 1 scarlet badis (dario dario), and I just added a few Adonis Tetra.
Since I added the Badis, I barely see the shrimp. I added the tetras last night, and now the Badis has been harassing them. They are all small, but the Badis is just a shade heftier than the Tetras, who are skinny and shy.
For a while, the Badis was bothering the tetras every couple of minutes. Now he's relaxed a bit, but still goes over and chases them around every once in a while. He looks like a sheep dog chasing a herd of sheep. He's obviously doing it on purpose, not just swimming too close to them.
Most fact sheets say that Badis are shy and retiring. This guy is so cocky and fearless that he was wandering over to check out my siphon while I was vacuuming the tank, going right up to the side of it, even while it was moving. He seems practically fearless.
One report online suggested that someone had a Badis who was very tough and not suitable for community living with other species, even guppies, which are quite a bit bigger than any Scarlet Badis.
Does anyone have any advice or experience with this problem? I don't know if I can keep the Badis in the tank if he's going to make everyone else's life miserable.
At what point should I take action to protect my fish and shrimp from him? I don't want to endanger the other inhabitants. And ultimately I want to be able to enjoy the fish and shrimp without anything having to hide.
