Nano fish that are unlikely to jump

I have a UNS 45S (45cm x 28cm x 18cm) that I'd like to set up.

I was originally planning on having it planted with shrimp and some small nano fish. The problem is a don't have a cover and I don't plan on getting a cover.

I'm struggling to think of nano-sized fish that are unlikely to jump. The best idea I've had so far is Neolamprologus similis. I would think shellies would be very unlikely to jump and much more likely to dive for a shell when spooked. Supposedly, N. similis aren't much of diggers so they could work with plants. Unfortunately, they won't work with shrimp.

What are some other nano-sized fish that are unlikely to jump? Would Dario sp. work?

Never had good luck with cichlids and plants. Cichlids always won [emoji23]

Good Nano stuff would be celestial pearl danio, chili rasbora. I've got these white cloud minnows from my youngest's kindergarten class that we adopted... 3 years later still going strong. Trying to spawn every morning

I wouldn't do pea puffers. The tank is too small for them. Not really in relation to size, but because of their intelligence and natural curiosity they get bored quite easily and that's just not enough room to keep them enriched. I also have a 45s. You could always do a betta, I think they are perfect sized for bettas. Keep the water level a bit lower and get a fancy tail like a Dumbo, they are less prone to jumping like short finned or wild types. I have a Dumbo betta in mine with the water level 2 inches down to keep from jumping.

My preferred stocking for this tank are scarlet badis. When my betta is no longer around I will most certainly restock this with 4-5 of them. They are gorgeous tiny little gems that aren't jumpers. The only stipulation with them is at least in my experience keeping them some years ago, they would only eat live food and expected nothing less. Still one of my favorite nano fish I've ever kept.

Dang, I had all but settled on a pea puffer. I actually also have a 30C that I just bought. My plan was to put the shrimp in the 30C and get a pea puffer for the 45S because the 45S has 150% more bottom area than the 30C.

The back up plan is Dario dario, but live food is a pain. Maybe true freshwater Bumblebee goby?

I don't want to get a Betta. I already have a Koi Plakat Betta in another tank, and I prefer fish with natural finnage.

If you are still planning on having shrimp and fish I would recommend sticking with chili or pheonix rasboras. Scarlet badis, betta, pea puffers and most other fish will eat the baby shrimp. I have kept chili rasboras and shrimp together in a 5 gallon tank for almost 4 years and haven't had any problems at all.
I bought a 30C (7 gal cube) for the shrimp, and I don't plan on stocking it with any fish. I'm going to keep it at work, and I don't got into work enough these days to feed everyday. Most fish won't like this, but it should work for shrimp.
