The number of fish food brands on the LFS shelf vs 20 yrs ago is mind-boggling. I'm preparing to stock a 12 gal. with mostly ember & green tetras and pigmy corys, and would appreciate advise on the current top few brands so I can avoid a building a collection of duds.

My Ember and Tucanos tetras like the Hikari mocro pellets described above but seem to love the tiny New Life spectrum pellets, too. I also feed frozen foods occasionally Baby brine, daphnia, and mysis. Every once in a while, I’ll hatch some live baby brine. But the staple dry foods are the Hikari and NLS pellets.

Couldn't agree more. Most of my small fishes have a habit of eating at the top. Sinking pellets do not get picked up by them once they start sinking. Flakes keep floating and even the bigger pieces get picked up once they become soft enough to be broken down. The only reason I still prefer Hikari pellets is due to their nutritional value. My fishes seem more happy, energetic and free from diseases when on pellet diet.

I'm having issues with my Cardinal Tetras and Harlequin Rasboras eating any food small enough and appetizing enough for them. Live brine shrimp always works well. Hikari Fancy Guppy is hit or miss (HAS to be fresh). Hikari Micro Pellets seem too big although sometimes they'll accept them. Hikari Tubifex (stick on glass) is nice as an occasional treat as are Hikari bloodworms, but I feel as if I have to stir the bloodworms into the water column since neither the Tetras nor Rasboras really seems to want to feed from the surface for some reason.

I'm a huge fan of the Repashy foods as well. Very high quality, you can make it in the portions you need, and being a gel, pretty much anything can eat it. Even my pencilfish all go after it even though it sinks to the bottom. After you make a batch, throw it in a ziplock bag and stick it in the fridge, it's fresh for 2 weeks that way (longer if you freeze it).
