Diablos - I love this article from aqualand. There are three parts to it, but this last section seems to answer a lot of your questions. I use it for my own ferns. I have found they love iron rich fertilizers. I have trimmed javas all the way to the rhizome before just to see what happens and I noticed that it will still grow leaves at different rates. Driftwood or chips of wood really seems to give the best results. http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Plant, Java Fern III.htm
Boy does that site bring back memories! That was one of the first fish/ plant sites (back when I was into fish, and not really plants) that I ever saw, and I would frequent it. That was about 6 years ago, back in 7th grade haha!

Java fern propagates well, but the larger the piece of rhizome is on the clipping, the faster it will recover and start getting its growth rates up to steam, IME.

Diablos, I used to have java fern do that as well. this might help http://nutrico.org/newsletter/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/nutrient_def_sympt.gif
