DIY Co2 Water Bottle Necessary?

As the title says. Is it necessary to run the Co2 line into a water bottle before it goes into the tank? I realize there is the potential for the yeast mixture to spill into the aquarium if it tips, but assuming it doesn't, does the mixture still end up in the aquarium? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes the DIY CO2 bottle foams and the foam can get in the aquarium. Also, in time you will notice a residue/bacteria forming from the tubing coming from the CO2 bottle. A water bottle can also act as a bubble counter. This is not to say that you absolutely need a water bottle ...

Yes, I have had the foam go into the tank. What a mess! I use (mostly) 2 liter soda bottles with a little gatorade or similar bottle strapped to it. I do not run it as a water bottle, though, just an air gap. Sometimes, the water has flowed back out of the tank, and into this bottle, too.
