I started a Daphnia culture awhile back and it was doing great. I bought some ghost shrimp to put in a tank that I have mollies breeding in. I feed both the baby mollies and the ghost shrimp to my sons cat fish and eel. I noticed several of the ghosts where berries so I did a quick Google search to see what they need to breed. I figured it can't be too tough since they are so cheap. I found that the baby shrimp will feed on the same stuff my Daphnia are eating, they will also eat some of the smaller Daphnia if they can catch them. So naturally I tossed all the berries females in the tank along with a handful of males. So far so good. Daphnia culture is still going crazy and the baby ghost shrimp have been growing. Along with the Daphnia and ghost shrimp, there are several types of what I believe to be cope pods, nematode and pond snails. All my fish love when I grab a scoop out of this tank every other day.
The tank set up is a 10g with enough gravel to cover the bottom. I have a modified sponge filters and a light that comes on for 10 hours a day. I also have blue light on at night. I do a 50% water change every 2 weeks or so. The water I take out of my culture tank goes in a 240g tank on the side of my house that I will eventually set up.( the 240g has mosquitoes along with the Daphnia I inadvertently suck up) I top off the culture tank with water from one of my various tanks in the house. I feed a mix of yeast spirinella and soy powder.
Since I have started supplementing my fish's diet with live food, my rams spawn like crazy, I have seen my Cardinals drop eggs and the colors of my apisto Hongsloi and all other fish for that matter have showed there true potential. I recomend anyone culturing Daphnia should give this a try. The fish love the baby ghost shrimp.
