Well after some thought on what kind of fish I wanted in my new tank I decided on the madagascar rainbowfish, which are a stream/river type fish.
After a bit of searching, I'm planning on a turnover rate of about 10x, or 500-600gph for my 55g tank.
Which I'll do with a canister filter as well as 2 powerheads.
I need to figure out what to use for a substrate. I'm wanting some plants, so I'll probably go with a good plant substrate with 1-3" river rocks on top. I've got some extra turface but it is probably too light for this application. Sand seems like it would be too, but maybe not... So what is a good heavier substrate for a river design?
I've got a couple medium sized pieces of driftwood I'm going to use as breaks, so I would have a few small pockets of slower water.
What sort of plants would do well in this faster moving water? Some mosses I'm sure, but not really sure which ones. Not sure where to start in the search for more. Also what level of light will these plants need, and will any of them need CO2 addition? With fast moving water and a decent amount of turbulence it will probably be hard to keep up, but I have a pressurized CO2 system on my other tank I can add if needed.
I've also got to decide on the rest of the fish for the tank. I'm thinking 6-8 madagascar rainbows, and 4-6 smaller loaches, probably hillstream types. I think I should have some bioload left... so what other type of fish would fit in with these? Also what would work well for clean up? With the loaches be enough? Are there any type of shrimp that live in faster moving water? Are the hillstream loaches also active snail eaters like other loaches?
