Hi folks i have a few questions regarding corys and pearl gouramis.I want to add a small group maybe 7-8 pandas to my 45 long my tank is heavily planted and there really arent any open "grazing" areas. Is it absolutely necessary to have open areas for them or will they be fine just going in between the plants? I have H. Japan and it covers the entire front of my tank will the corys tear it up?
My second question is will pearl gouramis do ok as a single fish or do they need to be in groups?
Thanks
Scott

Pearls are an exception to this rule, Pearls are one of, if not, the most peaceful Gouramis available. Pearls are best i find in breeding pairs, or larger groups. I currently keep a breeding pair in my 40 tall and i have no issues at all with aggression towards one another or surrounding fish. They are kept with small (Endlers) and medium sized fish (Bolivian Rams) and show no aggression in the slightest

Pearls are one of the more gentle Gouramis, but they are not always so.
I have heard of Pearls being so aggressive they attack all other fish. Granted, this is rare compared to Dwarfs or 3-Spots, but it does happen.
I have kept Pearls and Moonlights (another relatively peaceful Gourami) in tanks with community fish, and they are fine. As you say, even with the smaller fish.
Still, I would rather suggest a conservative path, and avoid putting more Gouramis in the tank than the territory is good for.

I have three pearls (a male and two females) in my 29G. They chase one another from time to time, but don't seem to bother the other fish.

I have three albino cories in the same tank (used to be 5), and they are constantly uprooting my p. helferi. But they don't seem to bother the other plants. It's just that the p. helferi never seems to want to root.
