I personally would not but if you have a water safe light then it should be fine. You will just be losing a lot of light when you could easily just put two bars across the top and set the ends of the light on them with maybe a plexi-glass cover if you want.

 

Depends on the metal. Some metal is more reactive, and water condensing on it, then dripping back into the tank might carry some of the metal into the tank.
