I feel so dumb, you get out of the hobby for just a few years and by the time you get back everything has changed. Ha. Without going full-blown $80+ canister filters, I would love a great suggestion. I LOVED my fluval canister I had a few years ago, but I just cant spend that kind of money right now. Whats a good option for me? thanks

I have an ac30 on my 5.5 gallon. It has adjustable flow and a ton of room for media. Its way overkill but for $30, you cant beat it.
+1 for the Aqua clear hob filter.
If you want a internal filter, i am using a small 200ml shampo bottle filled with Matrix, punched holes in the bottom and placed a powerhead on top. It works really good and takes very little space in the tank, it is hidden behind plants and no tubes or other technic outside the tank.
It is cheap and i do reccomend this for small tank.
