Some months ago, my grandmother gave me several boxes of old jars. Among them were several big gallon jars. Back in January, when I was bitten with the aquarium bug, I dirted a few and capped them with sand. They were home for marimo balls for awhile. Some floaters got added when I won some, and one even housed my first betta temporarily (he was a tiny thing) while his tank cycled. Now they've become the place to put trimmings to grow out. I hope in time they'll become nice and full, but in the meantime, they seem to be an easy place to toss extras. The snails are happy, anyway. Click on the pics to see them larger.
These jars only get light from the windows, no heaters or filters. Partial water changes 1-2 times per week.
Jar 1:
This one contains pennywort, some chain sword, frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, and marsilea minuta.
Jar 2:
This one has a cryptocoryne spiralis, bacopa caroliniana, and more floaters. The spiralis is growing out of the top of the jar. I hope this is all right... don't want anything to happen to it.
Jar 3:
And this one has more chain swords, bacopa, and floaters. This one had a huge issue with algae. It looked like an overgrown lawn. I took out the stones the algae was growing on... that helped a lot. Then this strange white foggy stuff sat on the substrate. I siphoned it out, but it kept appearing. Each time, I siphoned and refilled the jar. Finally, it looks like it's almost gone. The snails in this jar were really sluggish compared to the other jars. Now they're more active, though a couple of them are sporting little lawns on their shells. I hope I'm finally getting ahead of whatever it was.
