zoo med 501 problem

i just bought this filter and set it up. i can hear the pump humming but nothing is flowing.

ive checked to make sure that the hoses are connected properly but still cannot get anything to flow.

any help please?

Well good luck the instructions don't make much sense.

All I can say is try filling it with water and let her rip.Make sure the can is not lower than the tank(pos pump is not strong enough)

I'm curious on the flow pattern of this filter I can't quite understand it.
it doesn't seem like it passes through the bio media section very well.
Anyone have a diagram of flow pattern for the 501?
Have you filled it up with water completely, using the filling hole? If there is still air visible in the filter it might be air locked.

Second that WP. If it's filled you may have some latent air pocket that a little canister agitation should dislodge and dissipate.

Don't have a diagram but...

The filter has a divider in the middle of it that has a small opening at the very bottom. The water flows in through the intake tube and into the bio-media/carbon/whatever section and then under the divider opening and up into the sponge then through the pump and out of the filter. The divider ensures that the water flows through the media before hitting the other chamber.
