I was looking into my tank at all the wonderful baby snails and the fish, until I spotted a long slender object. It was brownish/grayish, and it crawled much like a worm or a caterpillar. I was a bit scared that it would do something to my fish so I reached my hand in and mashed it really hard with my finger against the glass until it floated away into the water flow.

Should I be worried about this?

sound like flatworms, the fish should eat it, was ir around 2 mm?

It was quite thin, and a little less than one centimeter long. Thinner than a standard staple (for staplers).

My water has been a bit dirty lately, haven't had the time to keep up with filter cleaning and water changes. There seems to be a bunch of brownish specks in the water that attach to the leaves, thermometer, glass, etc.

Yay, it's harmless... Now I just need to clean my overly dirty filter.
