I would like to get a algae eater to help with some algae problems I've been having. I'm in the process of fixing the cause of the algae (lighting, lack of ferts, not enough CO2), but I'd like to also get some algae eaters to help in the meant time. I'm going to get a couple otos for sure. I'm going to get some apple snail. But will gold algae eaters hurt my plants. I like the fact that they are very fast and efficient cleaners. I've never kept them in a planted tank though.

Try a true (make sure it's a true one) siamese algae eater. Gold/chinese algae eaters don't eat algae after they get a whiff of fish food and they get real mean as they mature.

no place around here sells them, just chinese algae eaters which I know will hurt the plants and fish.

Not until they mature. This fish often reaches 10 inches max although rarely seen but adults do have a very nasty behavior and habit of sucking the slime of your fish much to their annoyance. No, we cannot recommend CAEs for your tank or risk getting other fish in trouble.

Yes, otos it is than. I wanted to add ghost shrimp but I heard that they will eat my other fish.
