i found some new compact fluorescent and the temp is 5100k..
will that promote plant growth?

Plants will be fine, it might be a quite yellow looking though.

yep. that will work but as yoink said will have yellow highlights.

Back in the bad old days, 5000K was super.

But folks these days have gotten user to the blue colored lights.
They actually grow plants extremely well.

kelvins doesn't mean it'll grow plants. you need the spectral peaks to determine if it's useful.
