Is there a technical reason people ramp their lights on and off gradually? To give their fish a morning and evening? It's neat and their light has the ability? Is there some other benefit to it?

The other benefit may be longer viewing time without too much light for the balance of the tank. When I did it just recently it was for both.

I have seen some folks say that they want to stress their fish less.

I do like to have periods of time outside of my photoperiod for viewing, so I will run the lights at 10-20% during that time. I have wired my lights through a smart dimmer though so it gives more of a step change rather than a ramp though.

My fish react better to it. With lights just clicking on from 0-100%, they would freak out and dart around the tank. Now they just act natural and calmly swim about like normal when lights are coming on. Plus I think it looks neat.
