I need some help. All my stem plants which consist of a couple species of ludwigia and rotala all seem to grow across the tank and not up. The only thing I can come up with is lighting. I feel as if they are getting to much light which is making them grow in this fashion.

The tank is a 40b and I have 2 Beamswork fixtures. In the front is a 54x1w fixture for the foreground and in the back(where the stems are) is a 36" .5w pent fixture that sits directly on the tank. Now the rear light only sits about 10 inches from the substrate.

Some of the stems grow across the tank and some will grow towards the front. Are some getting to much light and growing across and the others not enough and reaching for the more powerful light?
