Is any one on here from around Evansville? If so where is your favorite place to shop for the hobby around here? And how many tanks, and what do you have in them?

My favorite place to shop is Pet Food Center, but Harps and occasionally Aquarium Concepts work too.

10 Gallon:
Fauna:
2 guppies
5 ghost shrimp
Flora:
dwarf hair grass
amazon sword

30 Gallon:
Fauna:
4 pristilla tetras
4 neon tetras
2 guppies
2 pit bull plecos
3 peppered corydoras
Flora:
dwarf hair grass
amazon swords

55 gallon:
Fauna:
1 green severum
1 gold severum
3 firemouth cichlids
3 columbian tetras
1 black skirt tetra
1 sepia tetra
1 common pleco
( This aquarium is a recent addition and I had to take all of the fish from the previous owner and have not had time to rehome any yet.)

I live in Owensville, IN. a few miles away up HWY 66. I like the First Ave Pet Food Center. The lady that orders the fish is awesome and will take special orders. The kids that work there are not always helpful and do not know much about the fish. I have even had a young lady too afraid to get a fish out so I had to catch it myself. The big problem I find is nobody carries decent plants and it costs a fortune to have plants shipped.

I am beginning to think I am the only person in the Evansville Indiana area !! Feeling a bit lonely . :^(
The Indiana section doesn't seem to be very active in general, at least since I have been on here. For your question, I may be able to answer part of it. I believe FAN is Florida Aquatic Nurseries, which is a large supplier for plants that ships to retailers and other suppliers. That is my best guess on it, so maybe that helps. Sorry, I am far from Evansville though.

Thanks for the info. The lack of planted participation in Southern Indiana sure makes it tough to get my tank going though ! :icon_sad: I think I am going to start with some crypts in the foreground and do a Emerson type start but not sure if I should fully cover the plants or just saturate the substrate. So any info would be helpful . :^)

No problem, hopefully you will be able to find something to get you going. Crypts do well emersed, but I have only grown the tissue cultured wendtii 'green' from petsmart. The growth is much faster with that one emersed for me. I believe that all of the crypt species can grow emersed though.

Anyway, keep the substrate saturated, but not to the point there is standing water or you may encounter cyanobacteria. Then just cover the top with saran wrap to keep the humidity up. Misting daily will help keep the humidity up too. You can establish a nice root system emersed, and you will only lose the leaves when the tank is flooded. Dwarf hairgrass also spreads well emersed, and the same goes for HC if you are looking for something else to grow at the same time.

Here's the root system from a two month old crypt I just submerged from my emersed tub. I have 3 more at the same size or bigger that can be split. The tank is 12 1/2" wide for reference.

I just joined the forum. I live in Evansville, and I concur that we don't have very many options when it comes to plants. I have been told several times when asking for plants "I can order those for you". Well, yeah, but so can I, smart guy. Why would I pay you to order them for me?

Anyway, I would love to be part of any shared information for this area. The Owensboro tip was interesting.

Maybe after I've been here a while longer (and gained some rep), perhaps members could even meet and maybe work out some "bulk" purchases and split costs. :red_mouth

To nofearengineer,

Wow how did I not see this post ?? Sorry about that ! I am glad to see at least one other person into the planted tank in this area !!! I have been getting mine from Pet smart for now , but they are expensive . :icon_cry: I will be either ordering from Illinois, or making a trip to Louisville, when the money allows .:icon_roll

I just recently moved back to Evansville. I have four tanks running atm.

1) 10 gallon: PRF cherry shrimp, Huge mass of java moss, mini x-mas moss, flame moss, Fissedens, reg java fern, java fern windlov, some subbwassertang, jungle val, Brazilian pennywort, and some rotala.

2) 10 gallon: Albino aeunus Cories, White cloud minnows, java moss, Brazilian Pennywort, jungle Val, java fern, micro swords floating, dwarf sag floating atm, frogbit, salvinia nantas, and dwarf watter lettuce.

3) 36 gallon bowfront: guppies(which I plan to get rid of), Peppered cories, false julii cories, Kuhli loaches, couple of Otos, java moss, reg java fern, narrow leaf java fern, anubias of some sort, some of the apongas bulbs, brazilain pennywort, jungle vals, and I just put in some anubias Barteri var. nana petite, Crypt Wendtii 'Tropica', and Crypt Undulata 'red'.

4) 20 gallon high: This is my sons tank so it only really has fish... two turquoise rainbows, 4 orange mystery snails, bristle nose albnino pleco, and a few flase julii cories.

Before I moved, I bread the Cories and sold them to my local pet store. I am hoping to get some CW10 Peru gold stripe cories in Sept. and to exclusively breed them.

I am working on getting a good dual stage regulator and then I will try my first heavily planted tank.

I live over in IL but just on the other side. I'm about an hour from Evansville just off of I64. I have trouble finding anywhere near me for plants. I like Harps for fish, I've never even heard of Pet Food Center. Where is that located?

Wow I havent been on here in forever. Pet food Center has a couple locations in Evansville. Just do a quick google search and it should show you where they are. They Dont have as much as Harp's, But they have a nice selection. I just wish that they had more plant options. I really wish Evansville had an Aquarium organization or something where everyone could meet and share fish, inverts, plants, and ideas. It would be really nice. We just need a better selection of aquarium stuff in general.

This is my 90gal as of 11/23/24 . All the plants came from Petsmart except the Anabus on the driftwood that came from Walmart in Newburgh. :)

I also live in Evansville, but I am just now starting to get into plants. I like Harps for information, Fish, and now recently they have water salamanders, which Id like to pick up some time. Ive only seen Amazon Swords in their tanks though. Petsmart has lots of plants, They arent in water, just in plastic tubes and that confuses me.. I plan on converting my cartoony tank with rainbow gravel into a sand substrate and live plants. If anyone has Ideas for my first plants (low tech)I'd love to hear it. I have 100 watts in this 10g tank if that helps at all. I am also willing to buy ferts, but no Co2 since this is my first...lol
Thanks!

I am in Owensboro. On highway 54 there is a store called "Fish Doctor". They are open Friday and Saturday 11-6 I believe. It is a super small store. Plant selection is poor. But they have a pretty decent amount of cichlids and a couple nice salt water tanks.

Other than that if you head to Louisville you can visit Clarksville and right beside the Bass Pro Shop there is the Green Tree Pet Store. Their plant selection has grown a little. Its a pretty nice store.

I only have a 75 gallon setup at the moment with Mbuna in it that I bought from Daves Rare Fish in texas. Had a 20 long planted tank a few months ago. Itching to get another planted tank started.
