Hey guys,

Kept fish for years, but this one is a new one toe me.

I have a 10 gallon planted tank that's been up for a month, but substrate is largely from an older tank I have.

Anyway, this stuff has cropped up on my driftwood. Anyone have a clue what it is?

looks like a fungus or bacteria, better known as "wood snot"
had some once, was told it'll go away by itself.(and it did).

I'm sure someone more scholarly, will be along to correct or confirm.

Ditto- a fungus of some sort. If it gets rampant, then remove as much as you can.
Many Loricariads will eat it. Do you have any plans for an Oto in this tank?

Fungus. It will almost certainly die off within two weeks. Most fungus doesn't last long in the aquarium.

Was considering it at some point. It's only a ten gallon tank, though, so i hesitate to really add anything beyond the betta I currently have.

Gonna just let this fungus roll and see what happens, i guess. Thanks all.

You can easily have 5 otos in a ten gallon. I just went and picked up ten otos from petsmart a couple weeks back, bought them to put in my 75 gallon, and have them in a heavily planted 10 gallon "hospital" tank (where I put new fish and plants so they don't ruin my big aquariums) and I doubt I'll ever be able to get them out of there, I hardly ever see them. So I would imagine since my 10 are doing good by themselves you could easily have 5 in there with a few other fish.

Looks like fungus. If it really bothers you, you can remove the wood from the tank and dip in a bleach/water solution for about 5-10 minutes. Then rinse it and dip/immerse in tap water with some dechlorinator for a few minutes then rinse again and return to tank. For extra safety add a little de-chlorinator to the tank when you return the wood to ensure removal of any residual chlorine. This process should eliminate any nasties. ..
