I dont know I thought the same thing about my 90cm planted tank when I added cherry shirmp to it. I have platies and plecos and gouramies, neon tetra, and the little guys seem to survive and breed well! I have lots of places for them to hide. heres a picture of the tank and it also has one betta fish.

You would be suprised George how much betta love to eat Cherry shrimp. I had this betta in a 10gal with cherry fish and it ate 30 of them in one day.

Your right they do have some bulldozer mouths. Its been so long since I had a gold fish, but went to my LFS and yeterday and got a better idea on how they are and wouldnt one in my cherry tank.

I added ghost shimp to my GF tank [when I had them] and I found later just how far they would go to get out. My ferret found a shimp on the floor and ate the head [eew]. The shrimp were skipping on the surface tying to avoid the GF.
