Which light..?

Hey everyone,
I'm planning on my 75G being high-tech all the way.

Only problem is I can't decide the lighting.

I don't think I can post ebay links, but i've never seen the fixture anywhere else. It's a hydroponics grow panel. The panel is 4X54W T5HO and demensions are 47"X13"X2.5". It has 2 fulham workhorse 7 ballasts and 2 light switches. One switch controls the middle 2 bulbs, the other switch controls the other 2. It also includes a hanging kit.

vs.

Catalina 4X54W 1234 fixture seen here:
http://www.catalinaaquarium.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=71_190&products_id=1652

I understand catalina has good lights, but I think I'd get more of an even spread with the hydroponics fixture.

Or, does anyone have ideas for a good retrofit kit, for under 200$? Can't spend more than that on light.

I was looking at these before I got a good deal from my buddy.

Oh yeah, that's the other one I was looking at as well. I just want an overall even spread of light. That's really all I'm worried about.

Demspey, can you PM ebay links? if you can I'll PM you the link and see what you think of it.
I will post the info about the lights so you can get more feed back. :)

Thanks a bunch! Hopefully this will give a comparison!

This light has 2 switches. 2 bulbs each. This is how they turn on... Fixture is 13" wide.

This category struck me as comment worthy,
Benefits for Aquarium Fishes:
  • Provides enough "sunlight" to maintain oxygen production by aquatic's photosynthesis for fishes.
"aquatic's photosynthesis for fishes" What's that, plants? Perhaps they're not's to goods with the American language, or just like using big words:eek5:
  • Offers day and night alternation surrounding for indoor fishes.
"alternation surrounding" Bad wording here or overall just a long sentence to say you can turn them on and off!
  • No infrared ray and ultraviolet radiation to destroy your aquatic and fishes.
What aquarium lights do that?!! Your aquatic SPECIMENS and fishes maybe?
  • The quadrate T5 light is perfect to cover the whole aquarium.
4 bulbs give good coverage, thanks for pointing out the obvious, OK this one may be a somewhat acceptable sales pitch.

If the choice were between the striplight in the catalina link and the one in the link that dempsey gave I'd pick the catalina one. The catalina site itself appears more reputable, the product is described better, there's a clear price and an option to change bulbs. The one on "fish need it" appears home made, the light itself and the website. Poor english there also, if you want my money, at least use my language properly ;)

Thanks for the thought, but the seller is 99.4% positive on ebay. But, that's not the point, bad english is bad english.

I actually posted both of those lights. I just couldn't post it because it was a ebay link.
i did a little dig and found a site that carries them...and proper english.

Here's the link: http://www.plantlightinghydroponics...00k-mix-t5-fluorescent-grow-light-p-2709.html
Not everyone we buy from speaks or types proper English. Even allot of folks on this forum! That really doesn't make me pick one way or the other. Ignore the "bad English" and look at the specs. That's all he is asking for. :) Just looking for advice.
True, but ckarr does have a point. I'd rather buy from a professional site than an ebay link, if the price is competitive. Which it is. So, I emailed the company, just to see if it's legit and expect an email within the next 2-3 days.

Which fixture would you rather have? for brand or coverage?
.... Ignore the "bad English" and look at the specs.
Specs can be the same in what you can measure, light output, watts used, number of reflectors, number of switches, etc. What isn't listed is the quality of the product and the company behind the product. If there were 2 cars available for the same price, both got 0-60 in 5 sec., 40 mpg, and a 1000watt stereo system, but one was imported from a guy overseas and one was from Chevy, Ford, or even better Mazda ;) which would you buy? I'm not simply trying to promote Catalina lighting but between the 2 I would purchase their product even if it were a little more expensive. I've never had one of their lights personally but I'm fairly certain their product is of higher quality than the one posted.

I would agree here. The ebay link I looked at was from a seller based in Ohio. He has many positive feedbacks. I'm going to wait on the email back from http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/ until I make a final decision. If they don't respond, I'll probably go with the catalina fixture.
It's good that you're doing your homework, but being based in Ohio doesn't mean you sell quality products, neither does positive feedback on e-bay. Feedback must be left within 30 days I believe, any light should be good for that long ;) They do have a firmer grasp on the english language tho  I just Google searched them to look for reviews, 1 good 1 bad. Good luck either way you go man, post tank pics and right a review about which ever light you get, good or bad, now and several years from now :D

Will do either way. That light fixture doesn't come with a bulb cover, but it's going to be suspending 6-7" above the tank. We'll see how it goes. If I get it I'll put a review up on here first thing :)

ADDITION: I just got the email back from a person at the website I posted. Very simple and to the point answer. He answered my question thoroughly and also showed me another light with a splash lens, but it'd be too long to fit in a canopy. 49"

Also, it doesn't have a splash shield on it, but it'd probably be hanging 7-8" above the tank, anyone see this as a problem?
I may put glass tops over it to 1. keep evaporation down, and 2. keep fish from jumping out (had an SAE on a suicide mission, unfortunately.)
