You may not want to hear this, but...

I'd encourage you to try building one. Fully able to customize to your tank's needs, and you should be able to buy the materials needed for around $50. What size is the tank you're wanting to filter?

Get a Odyssey 500 or 700. TopDogsellers on Ebay.

I got a 500 and my tanks look a TON better. Very powerful filter.

Definitely pennplax cascade 1000. It's a simple, reliable and use-proved filter. There is an review of both: Best canister filter 2017 review: all models with cons and pros

We have the cascade 1200 on a 40 breeder and are pretty happy. This is our first planted tank so nothing to compare it to but it seems pretty good so far. We cleaned it for the first time last weekend and it was quick and easy and relatively mess free!

When it comes to canister filters, I don't think your ever going to find the perfect one, no matter what brand or price.

That being said, most will do a decent job for you.

After you are sure the unit will work for you, the next consideration is how easy is it to get replacement parts? Do a search on the filters your interested and find out if you can get replacement parts at all and if you can get most or all of the parts to it. You don't want to have to replace your canister filter because you can't replace one inexpensive part.

If I were limited to the choices in your original post, I'd get the Penplax cascade. If I could get anything, I'd say spend the additional money and get Eheim or Fluval, They are high quality and have a good selection of parts available. They are more expensive, but you'll only need to buy it once.

Lastly, everyone has an opinion on canister filters, so don't feel that any one person is necessarily correct here, including this post.

Eheim 2213 should be fine for that size tank and it about that price. They are also dead quiet if that's a consideration.

I might also add to this - replacement filter pads and mechanical parts are pretty easy to find for these models.
Amazon, $80 - also comes with some of the best bio media around.

I had a bad experience with my Eheim 2213, but chalked it down to a faulty unit and let it be. Many of the seals loosened up before the year was out, and Eheim wasn't in the mood to do so troubleshooting or talk warranty information with me -shrug- but it was a great filter up to that point. Looking at reviews, I only found a few people who had a similar experience. The canister is in the garage now, resting as a project to get up and running again...

You got plans or a DIY youtube video or website for this?

I like the UV and the skimmer that comes with the SunSun. However my 304B started leaking after about a year.

Rather than buy replacement gaskets, I chose to switch to the slightly more expensive Aquatop version.

From what I understand it's like the difference between a name brand television from wal-mart and the same model from an electronic supplier. The former is made with cheaper internal parts.

SUNSUN are higher quality however very weak as far as GPH vs Odyssea. Also, the higher GPH ones use like double the electric as the other canister filters which will cause global warming. LOL

I have a sunsun 303b and I am quite satisfied with it. Though I've only had mine for a few months so I can't chime in on how its done over a long period. But I like it and its my first canister so I like the flexibility you get with them as far media options.

Are talking about sunsun canister filters or odyssea?

Sunsun use a lot more power per GPH than the Odyssea.

That was one of my reasons for avoiding the larger sunsun and getting an Odyssea. I did not want a big power bill.

TheKingofDIY has some incredible tutorials on Youtube. I personally found them easiest to follow.

He also sells a book that details exactly what the building process entails, but I was able to configure one using the video (and the help of the peeps at my local hardware store)! Hope this helps anyone considering a foray into building one...
really appreciate the input , however i was able to find the cascade 1000 on craigslist new in box for 35$ so that pretty much made up my mind . if i dont end up liking it i will probably save up for a higher quality unit , waiting on media in the mail to set up , i went with seachem purigen and seachem matrix and plant on getting some poly fil , havnt decided on carbon and a sponge in the intake tube so i dont clog the canister with baby fish

I saw another youtube video in which someone had one of those and he ended up getting an Aqueon HOB filter instead. He said it was too much work to open those things up and you needed like some special wrench every time you wanted to clean it.

You don't want to end up on Jay Leno's red neck repair segment.

Well that is certainly not the experience of the vast majority of eheim users. I have several that I've had forever without issue and they are still dead quiet. There used by the majority of people on the forum. For something like a filter that lasts a long time and is designed for ease of maintenance doing a DIY is much more trouble than it's worth.
