OK I'm adding a Aquaclear but have not figured if it should be a AC20 or AC30.

It's going on a 29 gallon tank.

Sorry ment AC30 OR AC50

I run an AC70 on a 25g. It's a lot of flow, but not too much, and I could always turn the flow down (but I don't need to).

I agree completely. Go with a 50 or 70, and if necessary either reduce the flow using the tab at the top or use a filter baffle to deflect the outflow.

i agree with everyone else go ac50 or ac70. i had 1 ac50 on a 20g it was perfect for that tank

Can't find any on Long Island to look at.
Was took it just a sexxier case around a Aquaclear everything inside is the same.

I AC 50 or AC 70 would work great (I have a AC 50 on a 10 gal-filters great).

I also have a Fluval C4 and that's a nice HOB filter. Separate media compartments so you can customize your filtration.

Always get at least the next size up aquaclear from the size of your tank. For example with a 10 gal you get at least an AC20, 20 gal at least AC30, etc... My 5.5 gal has an AC20 but I think an AC30 would be fine, too. Over-filtration doesn't exist unless your livestock like things mucky or with zero flow.

I would do at least a 50. I was using a 20 and a 50 on my 29 gallon way back and it was far from too much flow.

How long do you think it will take to cycle the new filter.

I want to turn the aqueon into a chemical filter.

Lots of variables there. Are you going to use seeded filter materials to get things going faster? What is your intended use for the tank: planted, fish, shrimp, combo? Are you doing fishless cycle w/ ammonia?

It a combo it been up and running around three months. This is a additional filter.

The closer contact you get with a previously cycled seed sponge the faster it will get the new filter ready. I would take the sponge out of the existing filter and place it below the new sponge in the AC50. That way there is direct contact and flow between the existing bacteria and its new home. If you want you could take the carbon from the new filter and swap it in place of the old sponge from the old filter to take up space, but otherwise carbon is fairly useless. It's still going to take time to get the new filter up to speed on its own but this will help. I'm guessing you're still looking at a week or two before it's ready.
