Hi there. Currently got a 75G Tank. Looking to get my hands on another tank (if not TOO pricey) To make into a shrimp tank.
Im thinkin something around 36"x18"x12" or so? I Was looking around and found a 36"x18"x13" which is supposed to be size 40 Long but the only place i found them was glasscages.com, which is something like 100$ Plus 36$ Delivery to the nearest pick-up area which is an hour and a half away (50$ Just in gas, if not more, in my F150 -.-).
Anyhow, anyone know a good place to get a tank from? In case i cant convince my parents (Yes, i still live with my parents, im 18 :icon_redf ), id have to shoot for something smaller. Say 30"x16"x12"? trying to stay with something wide and short to make a great display, but that isnt TOO Short to the point where i cant have plants and stuff in it. 24" seems a tad bit small (isnt that the width of a 10 gallon?) so id say 30" Minimum..

The 40 Longs that I know of are 48" long not 36". Why not go with a 20 Long or that Mr. Aqua 12 Gallon tank? I think those are the dimensions you're shooting for. You could get a 20L from Petco at their $1 a gallon sale for real cheap.
40 Breeder is 36x18x17
Keep on looking, perhaps Craig's List or garage sales.
Shipping on an aquarium is very expensive, so look locally.

Nothing wrong with being 18 and living at home!

I have a 40 gallon breeder, and it would make a great shrimp tank. The extra depth from wall the front of tank makes designing the layout really easy. Very easy to get a 3-D effect. Just cannot do that with narrower tanks.

I know! Thats what im looking for. Only problem is that the breeder is tall (well, pretty much standard height, but unnecessary gallonage that i dont need). Im trying to go for the biggest tank possible that i could fit, but that isnt high, to keep the gallonage (Dont even know if thats a word) as low as possible, in hopes that my parents will be OK with me adding another tank in my room.. (Already got my 75G upstairs :D not too sure theyll let me put ANOTHER, but i want to get rid of my dresser and put another tank under my TV :/)
Anyhow, I did find an old ad on craigslist for a 40L so we'll see what the guy says.

As for dimentions,
40 Longhttp://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=OrderForm&sProdID=AQ_40Long 36 x 18 x 13 Tall
45 Long is the one thats 48" and only like 12" deep.
40 Breeder that i found on ebay is 36 x 18 x 16. Not sure how its 3" taller and ALSO 40 gallons? Friggin weird.

just used a gallon calculator thing. Turns out the 40 Long is actally like 37 gallons and the 40 breeder is actually like 45 or so.. so the 40 long seems decent.
Anyhow, i really dont want to spend like 200$ On just the tank, so i hope the guy on craigslist gets back to me, as hes got a stand and all.
Worst case ill go for a 20L. A bit small but i guess it works for just shrimp. Problem is my Petco is pretty small and even when they have their 1$/gallon sale crap, they dont really have too many tanks.. They had 10's and 20's didnt see any 20L or anything larger lol. When they have the sale they DO bring in 2 or 3 pallets and put them in the middle of the isle so that you could pick and what not but im not sure that the sales going on right now.

I picked up my four 40b at petco for $40 a piece. If your looking for a 36" tank on a budget, that is deffinetly the way to go.
Sounds good. I'm going to go there in a bit and probably to petsmart too to see what theyve got.
I think you have the 40 long dimensions wrong, ive seen them 12-13" wide and 18" tall.
That price is petcos sale price. they do it like 3-4 times a year I think where you can get tanks up to 40 or 55 for a dollar a gallon. If you have time I would call and see if the sale is going on now, and if it isen't then ask them when the next will be. I think a 40b normally goes for like $100 + or - a bit. so its worth waiting untill the sale comes around!
Pet Supplies Plus has $1 per gallon sale but my location only had up to 30 g.
Was at petco earlier. They had 20L and 40B tanks. You were right, btw. 40L is apparently 4' long. Weird because the site i was looking at was saying 40L was 36". maybe they meant 40B.
Anyways, im looking into 20L or 40B as of right now. The 20L Was 40something bucks and the 40B was 115$ At petco. That sale is currently not going on. I may just wait for now, idk. Trying to find one on craigslist for now.

I am also 18 living with my mom and grandma. I still don't see myself even being able to move out in the next year or so to be honest. Financially I would not be capable of it.

Yeah try and wait for the dollar a gallon sale. I bought a 40b for $125 and a few weeks later the dollar/gallon sale was on and I was very frustrated.

Haha yeah i dont plan on moving out anytime soon, either. Still got 3 years or so of college, so im taking my sweet time
Sides, even if WAS able to move out, i probably wouldnt 'cause its so darn expensive haha. Especially here in jersey. Good luck finding an apartement for less than like 1300$/month.. Got Rutgers university right next door (Town right over), so the students are sure to keep the prices nice and high -.-..
That and the amount of rich people. My parents pay around 1300/month (actually, more than that) just in property taxes around here.
Try ~$9,000 in property taxes in CA, and that's with Jarvis Prop 13 that supposedly keeps the RE taxes to 1% of the original value. :( :(
What they forgot are all the 'special' assessments that add another ton.

But that's off the subject....

IMO, if you can, go with 40B as it will give you more options now and in the future. An you can always sell the shrimp to pay for it :) Relatively shallow tanks (~12") pose their own set of unique challenges.
Oo another cool idea. So, there isnt much height clearence under my TV, and its basically permenantly mounted on the wall, so i had a cool idea. How about getting two 20L Tanks and building a custom doublestack type of stand. That is, one tank on top of the other. Anyone do something like that that can post some pictures for "inspiration"? Not sure how im going to do it but i like the idea :D.

9000 a month? Im talking about 15000 a year. close to 16 now, haha.
I Guess it depends on the size of the house your comparing to mine. Dont even know how big our house is exactly, but i know 2 or 3 towns over they are paying 9000 for a house twice the size, haha.

Anyhow, im thinking either 40B or two 20L Tanks one on top of the other (With a few inches in between, obviously, so i have room for my hands and stuff).
Lol definitely can't complain about property taxes to an nj resident. Being are backwards government has got us holding the highest property tax rate in the nation for 16 years and counting. In 2011 we paid 22% more than the second highest state (ct). I dunno where in jersey you are from aqnoob, I live right off gsp 114 and there is a petland in hazlet right down the road that sells tanks dirt cheap year round. 75 gallon tank has been 119 bucks for like 10 years. But only with black rim. They also sell healthy otos for .88 cents all yr.
