Whats your opinion on Yellow Labs?

I currently have a 55 Gallon tank stocked with 8 demasoni and thought of introducing Yellow labs to the mix. What do you guys think? Do you guys recommend just keeping a demasoni only tank or would another cichlid being in the mix be good?

I have kept both but never together for 1 simple reason there is a possibility for them to cross breed and personally I frown upon that for my own personal reasons. But if you don't mind that and provide a good amount of cover then there is no problem. Demasoni are quite aggressive toward there own kind as you probably know they do better in larger groups to help spread out the aggression as in smaller numbers they will literally kill each other off to the end. Because I used to breed them I kept all my tanks species only. If you are looking for something colorful to go with them maybe something like a Kyoga flameback as they are a smaller species also, they are also a gorgeous cichlid and should not cross breed. They are monomorphic unlike the demsoni so only the males have amazing color but 2m 5m would be a good group. I used to breed these as well as the albino.

Added: I would get some Texas holy rock and make sure you have lots of cover then add another 10-15 demasoni. They are usually very easy to sell. Just my opinion though

Just curious whats wrong with crossbreeding? Don't plan on doing it and now that you bring it up I'm starting to become hesitant on mixing the two species. Also since my Demasoni recently crossbred with another cichlid before I had a chance of rehoming the other cichlid
Mutts!! We don't want to go further into going to a store an not being able to know what we are seeing. Yellow labs are often seen/sold with all kinds of weird markings. I have been told that "they get those when they get older", as well as a number of other stories. The truth is that yellow labs will cross with anything but a shoe!
The pseudotropheus group in general are far more aggressive that the labs who are very docile, so when a female lab is ready, the lab males are less likely to be there than the pseudotropheus. You can easily wind up with a tank of fish which folks with any ethics will refuse to buy. AKA: MUTTS!
For tank mates for the rougher group like demonsi, I would look for some of the other rough group within pseudotropheus. If you choose one which is dramatically different in color or patterns, there will be far less chance of crossing.

Yellow lab mutt. Pretty fish who had to be culled. I now work harder to avoid the situation.

Quality of fish in the aquarium trade. Often times people sell the fry as electric yellow say in this instance and then these get bred by someone else and mixed in to the species and it weakens the true genetics over generations essentially wiping out the purity of the species entirely. This is actually already a big problem with species like electric yellows as there are claims some still exist in the wild but they are thought to be extinct and I too believe they are. If you ever see wild caught electric yellow or even f1-f2 and so on for sale you know your being ripped off. I don't want to rant on it forever but that's the gist of it.

If you ever decide to breed your Demasoni or try to keep the fry as they will breed on their own shoot me a PM and I can give you some tricks that makes things a whole lot easier.
