What's wrong with my Ember Tetra?

1316 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  killaguppy
I have an Ember Tetra that has a big ol' lump on it's head. I have no idea what it is. I've had the Ember Tetra for nearly a year, but this thing started developing a month ago.

Other than the giant black pimple looking thing, the Ember Tetra seems to be behaving normally. None of the other fish have gotten any thing similar.

Any idea what it is?

Its a brain tumor!!! JK, I have never in 25 years of fishkeeping seen one. Good luck!
Tumor, parasite, or infection are the possibilities that come to my own mind.

Tumors wouldn't be treatable, but you might QT the fish and try an antibiotic in case it's an infection.
I agree with lauraleellb and QT it and treat it for a bacterial infection. If the swelling doesn't go down after a few weeks of treatment I would try treating for parasites (of course after a few water changes to remove the previous medication).
Thanks for the suggestion, but quarantining isn't an option. We only have the one tank. It's a tiny 5.5 gallon and we don't have anything for a 2nd hospital tank.

I would've pulled the fish out immediately, if it started behaving abnormally. But acted fine, so I left it.

So no one else has had anything similar? Maybe on another part of the fish?
The fish is still acting normal. The lump isn't getting any bigger, but it ain't getting any smaller either.
