I started an one gallon shrimp bowl :smile: couple weeks ago by following Walstad's direction. Everything is going well so far except for hair algea that starts to grow everywhere. Since I only have couple red cherry's, I'm thinking of adding a snail or two to help. Any recommendations? Since the bowl is small, I don't want to add snail that will propagate too quickly.

Pond snails are good, so are MTS.

ya... i wouldnt add pond snails..
I have a 1gal shrimp vase, and I recently added 2 very snaill horned nerite. And they did a hell of a job cleaning up the algae on the inside.

A dead snail, man I hate snails. I would go with some type of Nerite so there won't be any new snails, I guess you bowl would support this type of snail. I would ask Msjinkzd if it would be OK for the snail, she knows her inverts.

Actually a couple of Amano shrimp might eat that algae.

+1 on small Horned Nerites. They're small and do a solid job.

Pond Snails and Malaysian Trumpet Snails won't overpopulate unless you overfeed - so either are definitely options.

I'm also a fan of Ramshorns. There are several color variations and their populations are easy to control. Some of them get up to 3/4" in size and are beautiful.

Dont MTS burrow in the sand, would we have to worry about the snail digging up the soil?

maybe one sulawesi snail.. depends on your water. they grow slowly and don't reproduce on their own. if you get a baby it will take a very long time for it to grow to 3" max. there are smaller species that get about 1"+ you could check those out.
if you're afraid of that type of snail eating plants, then feed it. blanched vegetables, algae wafers all work well. they will feed the shrimp too.

A single nerite will take care of that bowl. I'd recommend one of the smaller ones like a Corona ( bumblebee )
