Lighting for Your 50 G

Hello gonzo...

If you want simple, then you can grow low light plants with less than 1 watt of light per gallon of tank size. Since you have two 24 inch light strips look for the highest watts you can get in a couple of 6,500 K bulbs, probably 17 watts per bulb. T8s are preferable , but if you can't find them, T12s will suffice.

You can get inexpensive bulbs at the local hardware stores. Keep in mind that with this level of lighting, you'll be limited to ferns, mosses, Anubias, Pennywort and Cryptocoryne plants. You can also add some others that grow well floated close to the light source like Indian fern and banana plants. Not a bad list of plants for very cheap lighting.
