someone recomended the Zoo Med 501

How small is the tank?

For up to ~5-7 gallons in a heavily planted tank, I'd go for either the Zoo Med 501 or Tom's Rapid Mini Canister. So a search on both and you'll find a few threads on the discussion of each.
