What kind of tiger shrimp?

3812 Views 29 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Bananariot
I recently set up a 20gal tank for RCS and tiger shrimp. My LFS sells high quality cherries and tiger shrimp, so I set myself up with 2 tigers and 2 cherry shrimp from them, then made a large order for the rest online.

Well... the tiger shrimp I got from them look very different from the ones I got through Alpha Pro Breeders. Namely, the LFS shrimp are blue with black eyes. So my question is, are they normal tiger shrimp, super tiger shrimp, or something else entirely? I'm baffled, and searching seems to have gotten me nowhere.

super tiger in a darker color~~ lol
Tiger shrimp tend to change color. Seeing as how rare a true super tiger is, I'm willing to bet they are just normal tigers.

Mine turned blue because it ate junk off my blue sand, some were opaque as usual and some were even a hint of red. Though the color isn't stable and will change from time to time based on the shrimp's mood.
See this line for the features of supertigers.

I have some supertigers and they never show any bluish colour, could be due to water parameters of the tank they are in. Here is one of mine. The colours don't show well in the pic but the head and tail are pretty yellow and the antennas are red (the base).

None of my super tigers are blue, I've never seen that coloration in a true super tiger.

I'd say it's a regular tiger with broad stripes.
Mine had the same color but they changed. And I am pretty sure they are super.
Yellow heads and broad stripes don't always mean super tiger.

I've never really seen colored super tigers, then again I have yet to keep any. I've bought tigers under the term "super tiger" but thanks to their offspring, i can tell they aren't
Just throwing it out there, i have some hybrid oebts which turned similar to your pic (black eyes, blue strips, blue body, but white dots on tail)... either its a super tiger or hybrid. But I think you have a super tiger!
So what happens if an OEBT mixes with super tigers? Asking because I have some super tigers coming but the tank they are going in has one OEBT. There is another tank I can put the OEBT if it will really screw things up letting them mix.
Okay, so my confusion is not unfounded, looking at the differences in opinion! The female's eggs hatched the night I brought the tigers home, so I'll be very curious to see how the young grow up. I have two blue shrimp in the tank (the other is presumed male, and I think his stripes are less bold. I'll try to get pictures of him if I can), and I intend to go back to my LFS this week and buy the rest of their stock. Super tiger or not, they're way too pretty to pass up on at their price.

Another quick question - does water hardness affect color? I know the LFS tigers I bought were housed in pretty hard water before I brought them home.

I don't believe hardness affects their color, I do believe its the environment, they'll try to blend in to. Also what they eat. They do look pretty though

Breeding effects color. Hormonal females will change colors. I love the color changes my tigers do. I had one turn bright orange others deep blue. I love my common tiger shrimp.
Regular tigers can be very pretty, for example, this (not mine).

Agree I think the common tigers are under rated. They are awesome with lots of verity.

Here are some of mine.

My babies

This female turned really orange when she had eggs.

Good lookin tiger there sir!

I'm a big Tiger fan meself :D

From experience, Tigers vary in coloration alot within each variant. Some will be lighter, some will be darker. Some will even be different colors within the same variant. I think Tigers are a fun line to play with if you're into breeding. They are one of the most challenging sp to breed successfully, but once you're able to, it's a great feeling of accomplishment. I'm trying hard to breed Tigers with Crystal White bees atm to no avail *sigh* ... not gonna give up that easily though :).

Only one way to find out man. Do it and tell us how it goes. :proud:

Like I said, Tigers are not easy to breed so I'm pretty positive not many "Americans" have successfully crossed the ones you've asked yet. I could be wrong, but I'm just assuming here.

What I can say is that they will cross, as I've had OEBT x BTOE on several occasions.
Ok. I was just thinking that maybe it's been done and it's one of those situations where either some cool stuff might happen or you'll get something reverted back to a normal tiger, kinda like mixing neos, yellow and red don't make orange, they make ugly little brown shrimp. I just figured it's been done and someone knew.

Anyways, shrimp will be here tomorrow, should be at least. Guess we'll find out hopefully cause they're going in the same tank since it's the best tank I have right now.

Looks like a tiger x bee. Reason, has some white in it. The faint blueish hue is a little unusual from what I've seen. Very nice robust female.
