what kind of cleanup-crew can live with puffers??

Well, I sure love my pair of pea puffers! They are so cool and charismatic.

But, their tank used to be a shrimp tank with tons of MTS and there was never any algae at all. Since the puffers ate all the remaining shrimp and snails, there is a touch of algae here and there which got me thinking - are there any cleanup-type creatures that might be able to live with these guys?

Actually, I would be interested in just about anything that might live with them! They are together in a 7 gallon tank, and they've both staked out a claim on opposite sides of the tank, but most of the time they are together and appear to be best of friends.

Any tankmate ideas for them??? thanks! Dave

All I can think of are otos and if the tank is large enough, bristlenose pleco. I've had puffers before and they don't bother fish. I wouldn't put any invertebrate in there as you've seen, they'll definitely get killed.
I have 4 of the guys in a 17G. Snails do not survive a day.

Out of 3 ottos I put there only 1 is still alive after 4 weeks (they could have died of other causes as I have never seen DPs attacking them).

All 5 RCS that I put in the tank the same day with Puffers are alive and well and just zip by DPs like they are not even there.

9 black molly fry (initially ~ < 1/4") I was hoping the Puffers will 'use' are now ~1 1/2" and I had to move some out. Many a times I see a puffer on one end of a black worm with a molly on the other.

What that tells me is that everything is situational: there are no fast and quick rules in this hobby. Pit bulls are considered dangerous, but I've met some pits that were the sweetest dogs ever. I've met Chihuahuas that charged my 180lb+ Dane.

Your own common sense and your conciseness should be your guiding stars.

As far as algae eaters go, I personally never had any that did squat for algae control. The moment they discover flakes, they forget the grass. I keep them because I like them, not because I count on them to work for me.

The thing about pitbulls are a myth. It's mostly abuse and mistreatment that turns them rotten. And everyone knows that chihuahuas are the yappiest dogs.
