Black spots kind of look like spot algae, I think. Very hard to see anything but the normal tan diatoms. I think I see what you're talking about, though. You are definitely going through an imbalance. How regularly have you been doing water changes?

My tank isn't fully cycled yet and I've been getting high nitrites so I've been doing big water changes every other day

I think spot algae has something to do with a phosphate imbalance, but I'm not 100% on that one. It takes a little bit of fussing around to find the right balance of nutrients in the beginning. Are the spots hard to remove?

Yes it's very easy to remove and is taken out by the filter after I remove it. I just got some Tropica Specialised Fertilizer so hopefully that'll take care of it. I heard it's much better than Seachem.

Be careful keeping your filter on when manually removing algae- it can lead to algae spreading to areas it wasn't in before (some types).
Okay I'll have to keep that in mind. I also noticed I have some on my plants. I thought it was just dirt but it does look like algae.

Fingers crossed. They do look like diatoms. I've been battling it in my month old cube. I've come to expect it, though. Trying to keep up week the active substrate eating nutrients is driving me bonkers 😅 comes with the territory, though. Good luck with your battle.
