what brand of cfl bulbs?

Hey all,
I am trying to light a 10 gal with an incandescent hood (one with good reflectors from petsmart) and I am having trouble with bulbs.
I got some EcoSmart CFL bulbs from Home Depot.
They are 14 W, Daylight, 800 lumens, 5000 K.
They are the highest color temp I could find there that would fit my fixture. They say 70% less mercury than other CFL bulbs.
I put one in a lamp I use to light my 2 gal betta bowl which has java fern, duckweed, and water lettuce in it and the duckweed and water lettuce started to turn yellow and die off. I was using a cheap 13W soft white CFL bulb before and the floaters were thriving (so was green water algae).
Are these higher temp daylight bulbs not going to work for my 10 gal?
It is a NPT so I just want low light.
I read the sticky on CFL bulbs and now I am just more confused.
Is there a particular brand I should try to find at a particular store?

Thanks,
Franco
