might be a ph problem or when you did the water changes they might have been too big too soon and you lost some bacteria colonies. remeber not all bacteria is in the filter alot of it is in the gravel and on the surface of glass, plants, and orniments. check ph if its under 6 the nitrogen cycle stops.
