FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- A horrified 8-year-old boy watched as his pet turtle disappeared into an alligator's jaws at an aquarium in the Florida Panhandle.

Colton Guthrie had donated his pet red-eared slider, Tomalina, to the Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach when the turtle outgrew her home aquarium. Colton's mother told the Northwest Florida Daily News Tuesday that the family saw workers place Tomalina in an exhibit Thursday with other red-eared sliders and an alligator.

Although the alligator had long ignored the other turtles, Brenda Guthrie said the gator ate Tomalina as Colton shouted, "Oh no, alligator, let it go!"

The Gulfarium has apologized to the Guthries' and gave them a special meet-and-greet with the dolphins.
I would be so sad, and even a meet and greet with dolphins wouldn't make it up :icon_cry:

Hahahahahahahaha. That's kinda funny, mostly sad but the people working there should have known better.
The gator probably had long ignored the other turtles because they were accustomed to being around it, and it around them, and there's safety in numbers.

This pet turtle was a newcomer, had probably been pampered most of its life, and had no idea how to guard itself against a large predator like that. The gator undoubtedly sensed its weakness and took advantage of it for a snack.

Had that turtle quickly joined the group of other turtles, chances are it might have blended in and not been noticed by the gator. If it stood alone while acclimating to its new surroundings -- well -- then it became easy prey.

Nonetheless, I agree that the workers should have known better. Incompetence bordering on negligence, I would say.

I'm sure the kid didn't donate his pet just to have it eaten.

I knew somebody who did research on alligators and he said that during certain times of the year the gators eat more turtles than anything else.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

As much as i love turtles, i find this to be quite hilarious.
Had that turtle quickly...
We are talking about turtles here right?
When they want to or need to, those little turtles can scramble. This little guy, I think, just attracted too much attention of himself. Somehow, he stood out so that the gator noticed him over all the others.

Whose idea was it to put the gator in with turtles, to begin with? Unless the intent was to supply the gator with a continuous food source...

It looks Natural!!
Busch Gardens has alligators on display with dozens of turtles, mostly red ear sliders. The first time I saw that, I was floored. But after watching for a long time, it was quite obvious that the turtles were watching the gators, and keeping clear. It probably helps that the gators are well fed, too.

I am suprised that the aquarium just took in a donated pet and tossed it in with the others. Aquariums should be highly aware of disease issues, and the importance of quarantine. Makes me wonder what kind of "aquarium" this is.
ROFL! That is hilarious and kinda sad at the same time. Atleast the zoo or whatever let him meet some dolphins.
