My tank stays at around 75 during the winter, but it gets so hot here in Denver that sometimes in the winter it's over 80 for days or even a couple of weeks. I really don't want to have a chiller and we don't have aircon - so it's tough to cool the water.

Instead, I have fish that just like warm like tetras, etc. My neocardina shrimp don't fare that well in the summer, though.

Are there any shrimp that will flourish and maybe even be happy at warmer temperatures??? I have heard of at least one kind that loves warm water but I can't remember what it was.

you'd be surprised how cool you can keep your tank with a couple fans and leaving your lights off on hot days.

Actually I wouldn't I fought against this heat for a long time and fans/lights only did so much to help. I can bring it from like 84 to 80 if I leave the lights off completely (for weeks) and run fans constantly but it seems so much easier to go with the flow and just get stock that likes the heat!

After 4 summers with the neo's I've noticed that they just don't fare well during the summer. Many survive, but a lot don't and the population isn't stable. The shrimp aren't able to grow their population very well because the tank has a ton of tetras that enjoy shrimplets and I can't seem to keep the population steady.

In the winter, they are happy. There are probably just 5 or 10 in the tank right now. So, I am thinking to try something different.

My tank is just 54 gallons, so it will be easier to keep it warm year-round and just settle into a happy population. I can't really move them around, etc.

FYI I have a low-tech, low maintenance tank and I love it that way. I have somehow managed to have a tank that stays clean and happy with quite little maintenance and the water quality stays great. So, 'easy' and simple is good!
