Hey, I was thinking about getting this for my 29gal:

Would it work in the hood that came with the tank, it's like one of those hoods you get when you buy a tank kit at Wal-Mart. If it would fit, would it be safe?

The VHO bulbs put out ALOT of light plus they are kind of being phased out with T5HO and LED options being more economical and versatile, so it may not be the best option for you.

I doubt that you would be able to retrofit a T12 into one of those hoods as they are big bulbs and the endcaps are quite large on them. They also run pretty hot so they may end up actually melting the plastic in the hood or at the very least boiling your fish.

I would look into a retrofitted T5HO bulb, that may fit under your hood.

Are you going to use CO2? If not than you should really stick with normal output bulbs.

You may get it to fit but it takes some good plastic and good ventilation to not warp. Might even be a fire hazard.

Ok sounds like it won't be very safe so I'm not going to do it. Not planning on doing CO2 I just wanted to get up to low to medium lighting without buying one of those t5 fixtures. It's only a single bulb hood so with the regular t8 tubes the highest I found at my LFS is 17W.. I'll just try it for now and see how my plants do.
