Very unusual aquarium setup...
Hi all... It's been a while since I've posted, but after I saw this, I figured I'd come post the link. It's a short Youtube-style video of a very unusual setup in an Eclipse 6-gallon tank. Enjoy! =-)

This is an older idea that I've seen done in various forms but this is the best setup I've seen as far as appearance goes.
I've also known of hardware related problems in the long haul even though theirs seems to be ok so far.

if i ever build a computer this is the one:thumbsup: the only thing that bugs me is why would you want to pay $60 for mineral oil

Yeah, woops, submerged* But yeah, oil wouldn't splatter even with a fan like that?
It would splatter if not fully submerged. But it is fully submerged
Yeah, while cool, this is actually an old idea. Back when I was seriously over-clocking computers (6+ years ago), we used florine and a mini freezer. It's actually possible to get below freezing without worrying about condesation or freezing of the coolant. In fact, the first computer to hit 1gig was done this way; quite a while before the freezer based production model.
I had thought about such a thing as an aquarium. One problem though; there can't be any minerals or electrolites in the water otherwise it will short out. Distilled water doesn't make for a happy fish!

Have you ever seen the P4 clocked to 5.25ghz with Liquid Nitrogen...?In fact, the first computer to hit 1gig was done this way; quite a while before the freezer based production model.

I had thought of something like this years ago, when I started planning my current liquid-cooled Dual 3.2 ghz Xeon power-workstation. I'm sure there must be better cooling fluids than glycerine. I would have tried some kind of light silicone oil like simethicone, which you can buy industrial grade for about $20 per 5 gallons.
But yea the guy needs some plastic plants in there. And those little floating plastic fishies with fishing line and little weight at the bottom. =-)

Yes and the fish prolly wouldn't like the electricity flowing through the water either. Not to mention the toxic metal ions like tin and copper. LOL
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember the following from high school chemistry... Water in pure distilled non-ionic form is a perfect insulator, because there are no available atomic structures to carry the current. But as soon as you dissolve an ionic substance in the water, it begins to conduct electricity.
For instance, plain salt - NaCl, becomes a sodium ion and a chlorine ion - Na+ and Cl-. The examples are endless. My knowledge gets cloudy here, but I would suspect that the free electron on the chlorine atom is the key to the conductivity.
Metals and other conductors with metallic properties (ie- exotic ceramics) have a physical property known as "the sea of electrons". It's the movement of this sea of electrons that we know as "electricity", and is the conveyor by which it flows. Since electricity is the free flow of electrons through a conductor, I would suspect the free electrons on the chlorines ion begin acting like a sea of electrons and thus make a conductor.
