I have a row of Val in the back of my tank which I used as a "screen" or backdrop and also as a nitrate sponge, as it grows quickly.

From a distance it grows well but I am finding that the tips are deteriorating once they hit the surface. Any idea what might cause that?

Also I would like to keep it from getting too long and getting to my filter inflow. Can I just trim the tips without causing the plant to die back?

Thanks!

The tips are on the surface and then some. Sounds like it's time for a trim!

Thanks!

I did a big trim with my weekly water change today. I did not realize how much light was being blocked by the part of the Val that was spreading across the surface.

Things look much better.
