USPS Hold for pickup?

15634 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Kat12
Hey guys . So I ordered shrimp and they should be coming between Wednesday and Friday. The mail is usually delivered at 11 AM on my block. Usually, my mom is home to pick up the mail at that time , however she has a new job starting this week. I have school and get home at around 3:30. I don't want my shrimp freezing outside especially since we are excepting a huge snow storm .

How can do I make arrangements to Hold the package for pick up?
Do I tell my post office? USPS? Or the seller?

The shipper can request hold for picking.

Sometimes you can contact your local post office and ask them to hold your mail. Your mileage may vary with that, though.
They cannot choose what post office they can deliver to?
I have one 2 blocks down, another one 5 blocks up, and one near my school
no you can't pick, it will be the office that services your area. in small towns like mine i know i could have the post office grab and hold it, but in a town like new york i would think your out of luck unless the shipper directed that. but you can always try.
All of your mail will go though main sort facilities and you'll have a local post office for your address. You can find that post office on the USPS website.

As jrill said, it's usually easier in small towns.
If you know what office usually delivers your mail even in a large city they will usually help you. If the package hasnt been shipped ask the seller to request a hold and give the seller the address of the post office you want to use. There is a million there so it will help if they have it.

You can also get your local post office to request the package to be held if already shipped. Don't have them retrieve it because that takes forever. Just ask them to hold it for you for pickup. You'll need the tracking number or it wont happen. Never hurts to try, they will freeze with the weather we are having.

Yea thanks.. I have a post office 2 blocks down my block and then another one 5 blocks up my block and another 10 blocks down and another one near my school. Lol
when you track it, it should say which PO it went to. it did for me when i requested the seller to place a hold at the post office.

but, most clerks that i dealt with so far weren't familiar with the 'hold for pickup' option and thought i was crazy that i came looking for a package. one was rude enough to call me crazy to my face. i almost lost it cause i looked it up online to make sure it's an available option. "Hold For Pickup

Customers can pick up valuable and perishable merchandise at a designated Post Office."

good luck and hope you don't run into any issues!

That's only if the tracking info is updated. I have been ordering a lot of stuff lately and everything that has gone usps didn't have updated tracking info until it was delivered. It always see "left sort facility" where ever it was being shipped from and the rest of the info wasn't provided until it was marked as delivered.

That's strange. I haven't had that issue, yet. They probably forgot to scan the barcode on the packing slip at each stop.
I have had nothing but problems with usps lately.. I have shipped out 10 packages priority since monday and none of them have updated the tracking info beyond leaving salt lake sort facility. It's embarrassing especially since I have no feedback yet and nothing has arrived yet.

Monster, does your packages come from Queens Village? Or do you live somewhere else?

Oh alright
Don't think it's a good time to be ordering shrimp, especially with the storm coming. Have that camera ready and expect doa.
Isn't there a friend or neighbor that can take in teh package when it arrives?
I usually call a neighbor. Put a note on your door to ask the delivery man to deliver to the house next door. Lol, I do that so many times that my neighbors told me I don't have to ask them if they are available cause they're available everyday. Me and my dad are always ordering stuff online. We get about 20 or so packages a month so yea. You can put a note on your door to ask UPS, Fedex, USPS, and DHL to deliver to the house next door or if you have a cooler, you can always ask the delivery man to put the package into the cooler but I doubt the cooler would do any good.
If you can buy several heat packs, then set out the cooler each morning and activate a heat pack, wrapped in a towel. Put the lid on the cooler with the note to the delivery person. PUT PACKAGE IN HERE, thanks :)
If the shrimp arrive, the cooler will be warm from the heat pack, but the towel will not allow the plastic bag of shrimp to contact the heat pack, so it should gently warm them without getting too hot.
If they do not arrive, you have wasted that heat pack, use a new the next day...
Alright, without the hassle of going to which ever post office they give me , I just told my neighbor to keep a lookout for a mail. Thanks guys
you can go on USPS.com and request a mail hold.
