using Eheim quick connect valve to limit flow?

as stated, is anyone here using the quick connect valve to lower the flow through an eheim filter (i'm using the classic 250 which doesn't have a variable flow feature on the filter itself). i'm having the valve on the intake side half open to get the flow i want, one down side that i can think of is the pump having to work harder but that's something i'm willing to live with. previously , i put a sponge on the return output, but that caused my tank to hardly have any flow at all and => algae + green water.

I've done this, but I controlled the flow on the outflow slide. making the filter pump harder versus starving it seems better to me. Maybe someone else can chime in on this. Just be aware that when we do things like this it puts more strain on the motor which should lead to accelerated wear. I've only been in this hobby for a bit over a year though so I can't speak from experience on how bad this is to do.
yeah i figure that much. i am willing to live with my filter lasting 5 years with anything after that being a bonus.

The recommendation is to have the intake valve fully open and only use the output valve to regulate the flow.

I regulate my 2217 with the outflow valve. It's less the 6 months old so can't say it's affecting the longlevity of the filter. I have it just barely closed.
thanks guys, i've switch to using the outflow valve instead of the inflow.
I don't use the valves to control flow, but rather make more holes in the spraybar. If you overdo it you can use sections of tubing to close them off to fine tune.
Just use the outflow. And remember there is no motor. It's magnetic driven. The only moving part is the impeller. That's why it's OK to control flow from the output.
