Using dirt with the llittle white ball things

1181 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Trickerie
We have a bag of potting soil and it has the little white almost styrofoamy balls in it. Will these hurt the fish? The soil is going under the sand.
My fish are probably all :iamwithst

i would probably not use that. get some miracle gro organic potting soil or another organic soil, it's cheap, easy to find, and a sure thing that it won't kill your fish. plus those styrofoamy balls are likely to float whenever you change up the tank, and then your fish could eat them... would be bad.
Those little white balls are most likely perlite, which will float and cause a mess. Just grab a bag of Miracle Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix and use that instead.
Then dirts out. Will stick with sand.
Perlite is easy to remove. Put the dirt in a bucket of water and skim off all the floaters.
Im constantly cleaning the perlite out of my tank. Its not a big deal besides being ugly, they stick to the glass and then you just scoop em out.
