Hi,

The fluval canister aquastop valve on the 305 normally takes a 5/8" hose.

Is it safe to use 3/4" hoses instead and then use hose clamps to secure them? has anyone tried?

I am using 3/4" on my 105 with the quick release valve. Fits perfectly. I did make a pvc u tube to go over the side of the tank.

Are you also using hose clamps to secure the hose to the valve?

I'm only worried about the aquastop valve side. the other end is going to a proper 3/4" hose barb then into my 3/4" PVC system.

I've found 3/4" to be a little too loose on those shutoff connections for my taste. That being said, I have run them that way before without ever having an issue.

5/8" PVC hose works better IMO, but you'll need to heat the hose to get it over the connection most of the time.

you mean running 5/8" hose instead of 3/4", and then heating up the end which connects to the 3/4" hose barb ?

you can buy reducer hose barbs at the hardware store though 5/8 is not that common

exactly. 5/8" barb fittings are not common at the HW store. 3/4" MPT to 3/4" barb is so much easier to get

oh I see! can you please tell me what kind of hose you use? is it just the basic clear hose one would get from Lowes/HD? or something else?

Buy the thicker clear hose 5/8ths interior diameter hose at either big box hardware store. Use the hose clamps too but be careful not to go too tight or you can crush the connectors. The clamps are a buck and a half each and good insurance.
