Not much buzz with the hobby in the Capital Region. Looking to see if I am not alone here.

It would be nice to trade plants with people in the area.. If they're any?

Same here! :) I guess we are not alone.
Yeah, it's surprising too. There is a great deal of business and interest with fish tanks, however not so much with the planted aspect.

The only local fish store around here that's worth going to is Eddies Aquarium. Any others worth the drive?
Any nice Fish stores in the Syracuse area? Might be worth a drive.
I'm in Albany. Seems like the majority of people in the area are SW
Syracuse

There are a few worth checking out, depends on what your looking for. If your into shrimp I breed a few different kinds. Some stores here are.

ABC Reefs- Saltwater mostly, they do have a nice freshwater selection though. Plants, a few different fish.

ABC 2, mostly freshwater, plants, discus, small selection of shrimp, good service. Talk to Kapil or Rachel they know thier stuff.

FishFinatics, best trade in prices in the area, usually do more than 50% of what they list for. Lots of fresh and salt selection, 500g koi tank.

Jamesville Pond and Supply, Great people been there forever, really depends on the day if they have fully stocked. They slack off a bit when pond season hits hence the name.

Fairmount Aquariums, not really recommend this one but sometimes they have deals. Tanks arent always clean and prices are high depends on what your looking for. Other than the petco, petlands in the area these are the best ones. I hit them all up from time to time lol.

I know that petco down here in Florida will order any plant they don't have in store for you if it's in their order sheet.

LoHud here as well. Putnam County.
There are quite a few people in the area.

I've got a question for y'all. I'm looking to decorate a new 135g and was wondering if anybody has used local shrubbery and if they had any suggestions.

I was considering asking some of my relatives out in California to cram a box full of Manzanita but I'm not sure I want someone else picking out my options :p Plus, the best pieces, the ones with the most character, will make it difficult to send other pieces in the same box.

I found some nice looking dried logs near my place that I was considering using but am open to suggestions.

For the most part I see people use malasian drift or manzanita. Main thing is for them not to rot too quickly, which I don't know if we have local species that qualify.

I get my manzyies from Tom Barr, for what you get I think price is fair, and he does pack them very well - 3-4 large pieces into one box. I will post a pic from my sell in next reply.
Ctaylor~ Now that's a response! Exactly what I was looking for, if I ever head up that way I'll be sure to check them out, much appreciated.

Also, I will keep you in mind, for when I decide to set up a shrimp tank. May I ask what kind of shrimp? Got a link to some pictures?
Oh Aqaustudent, good to know I'm not alone in Albany. I work in Albany, but live in Colonie.

What do you mean by local shrubbery, You're planning on using shrubs in your tank?

By shrubbery I just meant what's left over. I recently showed my friend (he's from China) a clip from Monty Python and I have shrubbery on the brain.

I'd end up using some sort of hardwood. There are some nice fallen pieces of birch that I feel would make a great scape.

I'm going to have some monster fish so I don't want something so large that it looks chunky but also need something that'll be able to take a beating.

I'm a graduate student a UAlbany. I'll hopefully be here for a few years (assuming I don't get kicked out).
