United Solutions, Rough and Rugged trash cans may have residue

1294 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bsmith
I picked up a large Rough and Rugged trash can to hold water for a water change and noticed a faint smell like bounce fabric softener sheet on it when rinsing it out.
Called United Solutions and was told since they are made from recycled plastics it may contain residue from the plastics used, such as laundry detergents etc. and do not recommend it for any food contact or in my case using it for fish water.
Learn something new every day... I did line it with a trash bag and used it that way. Hopefully the trash bag isn't contaminated with anything in this way.

Another reason not to use recycled materials!

JK... I learned something new also. Thanks for the info.
Trash can suggestions?

FYI I found out info for the trash bag that I used to line the trash can, which was a "Kirkland Signature" one from Costco.
They informed me that there are NO recycled materials used in the manufacture of them. They could not recommend them for food in that they have no idea how well they would keep the food compared to a ziplock bag ect., made for food storage.
That was good to hear. Now I just have to find a trash can not made from recycled materials....
Anyone have any suggestions?
Cheap, check Craig's list for syrup or food grade barrels. Typically they run $15 - $20 for approximately 55 gallon barrel. 35 gallon are quite often available.

If the local dairy also bottles apple juice, they will have food grade barrels to sell. They get apple juice concentrate in them.

They are available as new from wholesalers, but you don't really want to pay that price. A farm store can order larger containers, at a larger cost.
I know those blue barrels that hold water would be safe. I think they are 55G barrels.
You can contact a plumber and get a brine barrel used for watersoftners.
