Hello all, new to the forums but have been browsing around for a while now here and decided I would start up a journal for some added advice.

Brief history, aquariums have always sparked my interest but never had one growing up or even after moving on. On Aug 22nd of this year I was at my LFS and noticed they had a cheap rimless 20g tall for $30. I talked to my lady and she agreed it could be fun.

Fast forward to now and 5 tanks later I feel like I have somewhat of a grasp on how this all works.

I have been planning for two months 2 new tanks, one build being a jungle style build and the other being a full on carpet. This journal is for my carpet tank.

My plants are :
Marsilea Hirsuta
Marsilea Crenata
Eleocharis special. "Mini"
Vesicularia Reticulata "erect moss"
One nana petite and a couple buce plants mixed in with a bit of Christmas moss.

I got all my plants for this tank from aquariumplants.com through tissue cultures. I washed each of them and cut them into individual nodes before planting.

Accessories:
-Penn-plax Cascade 1500 with the flow reduced.
-Finnex ray-2
-ADA power sand M with more powder ADA nutrients on top.
-That is covered by ADA amazonia
-That is covered by contra soil powder style.
-GLA pro regulator with 2 manifold style block.

Nutrients:
Since having set up the tank on Saturday I have been dosing the green brighty step 1 and thay is it. 2 pushes every two days.

I never boiled my bonsai before adding it in. Bacteria bloom like no other all around the erect moss.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

It is my first time using co2 in an aquarium setting. I use it all day long doing Solvent less CO2 extraction for the cannabis medical field.

Looking for some advice on my drop checker. It seems to be reading high co2 all the time. I turned on an airstone in the tank and left it running all night during the dark cycle when co2 was off and it is still a sage green on the drop checker.

Just looking for some overall feedback and maybe some pointers in the right direction.

I really like your scape. That Bonsai look is amazing!
Thanks Econde! I feel as though I could have gone a bit different with the styling of the tree and the erect moss now that I have seen it built. But I am really excited to see how it grows out. I came home the 2nd day and it was floating in the tank of course hah. So I anchored it back down with some rocks. After it is fully sunk on its own it will get turned to the right more to show and take up more space and no rocks on the trunk.

Appreciate it
You're certainly off to a good start!

I too like the bonsai tree quite a bit, and I actually also like the look of the rocks around the trunk (though of course they won't be on the tree when it's saturated with water finally). I've always thought it looked cool with the "roots" of the tree draped over rocks like it had grown out from some rocky outcropping. But maybe that's just me... oh and don't worry about the white bacterial film. That will go away with time and fish/shrimp usually nibble on it whenever you're ready to add some.

The drop checker in the photos looks like it's green, unless I'm mistaken? Does it go yellow at some point? Otherwise, green is good. I will also say I haven't really liked those hangover drop checkers, I wonder how accurate they are relative to the in-tank ones with the larger opening... so that's something to consider as well. Your CO2 will also be higher right now cause your plant mass is fairly low. As long as you don't have fish or anything in there other than plants, the high CO2 isn't a problem. You can spend the startup time to really dial it in before adding livestock.

Welcome to the forum and best of luck!

Thanks ChemGuyEthan! I really have always like the look of the simplicity and your right the natural feel of roots growing over rocks makes everything seem a bit more real.

I took your advice and re-did the drop checker and this time I put it inside the tank instead of hanging over the side. The CO2 from this point on since them seems to be perfect.

Everything seems to be growing in nicely, I am excited to see what the next few weeks bring!

Hello everyone, been a little while since I have posted. I wish I could say all has gone well but a lot of frustration has occurred while trying to grow this tank in..

Over the last month I had hair algae that came from a dying buce plant. It literally got everywhere faster than I could stop it and consumed my erect moss on my tree. So one frustrating day I took all the dying carpet out and ripped all the moss off the tree. I have another tank going so I had a bunch of staurogyne repens left over from tissue culture. I also found some triangle moss that I really liked and was able to purchase some.

I took out the tree and boiled the wood and let it soak in fresh water with some prime in the bucket. The tree seems to be giving off less fuzzy bacteria.

So what I am dosing is this. EI with 6 days dosing one rest day.
Sun : GH booster 1/2 tsp | 1/4 tsp KNO3 | 1/16 tsp KH2PO4 | 1/16 tsp K2SO4
Monday : CSM+B
Then I swap each days with rest day on Saturday and WC on Sunday.

About 2 to 3 bps from pressurized co2.

Last 2 days I have been dosing Florish Excel to cut down on the algae. Also have it building up on the rocks. I have 2 cherry shrimp | 2 amano | 1 yellow and 3 ramshorn snails.

I have been trying to keep everything as clean as I can but I am still getting the little white worms on the glass. I am at a loss and have really no idea what to do from here. I almost feel I need remove substrate to rid all of the algae.

This last picture is some of the same plants looking way better in another tank with just florish excel dosing.

Thanks,

Dan

You probaby could cut down your dosing a bit. You don't have any fast growing plants so maybe halve it or even more, as I find EI is more suited to stem heavy setups.
Also try adding some floaters for the time being. Just basically increase your plant mass and that should help combat the algae.

Thanks for the reply, this is my rest day so I will try this week cutting my dosages in half and see how that goes. I am also taking out that wisteria and adding a few more stem plants.

Those are some really nice species as well! Very jealous, can't get that stuff in Malaysia. Hope all goes well.
Maybe try cutting light a bit as well and see if that helps.

I got alot planted and removed the wisteria. Also removed as much hair algae as I could and just dosed a small amount of florish excel. I plan to start my EI dosing again tomorrow and cut the formula in half. I also raised the light off the tank.

I started this tank with a ray2 and now am using a planted+.

Today I added 6 small Oto as well. Seemed to be getting along very nicely. I didn't get 6 just for this tank but put 4 in and 2 in my killifish tank which only has 1 Oto that I feel bad for. Within 2 min of the new little Oto in the tank the killifish had half of one in its mouth. I was able to pull both the new ones out but wasn't able to catch the 3rd bigger one.
Yeah maybe just try and have all the Otos in this tank.

Was just able to catch him, now there is 7 Oto. In this tank.

Thanks for all the advice, I am going to put it to the test. Will update as it processes.

Your substrate mix is killer already , and on top you fertelize. That is the reason your plants are not doing well.
I start fertilizing after 8 weeks in a new tank setup, and I only dose Potassium & iron that's it. Cheers

Power clown, great advice. I did take all the precautions when starting this tank up. Your are right I will be leaching nutrients from the soil for a while. So your saying i should stop dosing all together the EI method for now and just do a daily dose of florish excel?

I wouldn't recommend stopping completely, but maybe moving to a leaner regime like PPS-Pro would be better. There are certain nutrients your substrate won't cover (Micros and K mostly).

Here are what I have for nutrients on hand. What would you guys recommend I dose.? I have no problem placing an order for iron or anything else I need.

Not shown is my equalibrium GH booster.

Hey i have a UNS 60U too. Love the dimensions of this tank! Has nice depth, so building up layers is easy.

Thanks Matt, this is most definitely my favorite. I also purchased 2 4.5g UNS tanks and they are top notch as well.

Algae seems to be under control for the time being but still curious on how I should dose coming into this next week.. any suggestions?

I threw in a picture of the killifish from my other tank that tried to eat the Oto, he's growing up nicely.

This is the first time in the hobby that I have had this many Oto. It is so fun to watch them cruise together, they seem really comfortable.
