Not sure what the term for how many times your filtration cycles the volume of the tank...So what is a average or good number?
I am thinking I have around 10 per hour.

Tanks allot!

Hi d,

Welcome to TPT!

Personally I like 10 times the tank volume in filtration, but I may be above the 'average' forum member. If the filter I am using doesn't allow 10X then I will augment the filter with a powerhead. Why 10X? I like a heavily planted tank and to circulate CO2 and nutrients to all areas good water flow is important.

Also, you need to realize that every canister filter is different (well Aquatop and Sun Sun are the same). You may find several different filters with the same gallon rating (e.g. 50 - 75 gallon tanks). However, each one will perform differently. I know that the Hydor 350 is actually too much flow for my 60 gallon tank (48" x 15" x 17"). I had to drill larger holes in the spray bar and reduce the output flow to keep things from "blowing" around too much. Like Seattle_Aquarist stated you can always add another powerhead if needed.
