I'm wondering if I can take a single stem plant and cut it into thirds to add plants mass. Each section would be approximately 4 to 5 inches with leaves. Is this ok or should I just top them and wait for them to go out again?

Instead of butchering the stem into many pieces?
Keeping the stem whole will be much healthier.
Find a way to lay it horizontally in good light.
Many times each node will start a new sprout.

I have done this using 316 stainless tig rod and thread.
Stainless screen/mesh would also work.
