trimming hg?

can you trim it down to the substrate?

What is hg? Do you mean HC?

yes hg= hairgrass

I do about 3/4 to 1" from substrate.

down to the substrate, yes. (try pulling out all the leaves, it'll grow back).

You can trim it down low. As long as it's rooted well it will grow back.
